10 years of Launching European Playwrights in America
Since it’s humble beginnings in 2002, Origin Theatre Company’s
mission to introduce European playwrights to
American audiences has been an incredible journey for me as
founder and artistic director.
I am deeply inspired by the extraordinary community of
artists and supporters who have grown with us over the last
10 years on both sides of the Atlantic. Two of these
individuals, Geraldine Hughes and Tim Kennon, we are
thrilled to be honoring at this years Spring Benefit. Both
have contributed greatly to the arts community in New York
and in particular Origin Theatre Company.
On May 21st, 2012, we celebrated some of the our achievements:
- watching the work of 40 European playwrights being launched into the American theatre community;
- creating the 1st Irish Theatre Festival in 2008, the only festival in the world dedicated to Irish playwrights;
- moving to our new office at the Art New York building at 520 Eighth Ave;
- Being invited to the White House in 2011 for the annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, meeting President Obama and the first lady, Michelle Obama.
In our tenth anniversary year we ushered in a new chapter in the
life of Origin including:
- the launch of our new website;
- the broadening of our artistic programming to include translations from even more European countries;
- the continued commitment to build and strengthen our
- infrastructure.
Only with your support can we remain devoted to giving the
next generation of European playwrights a voice in America.
Thanking you for your continued generosity.
Best wishes, George C. Heslin
